Progressing into the 1970s; curators, artist-writers, art critics, art dealers and educators were all keen to have a hand in shaping the next wave in Australian sculpture. This lecture highlights those who had returned from years of overseas study/exhibitions coupled with those emerging from art schools who were eager to make their mark on the national ‘landscape’.

Artistic influences and time spent overseas influenced the work produced by local artists including the stronger shift toward abstraction. The small but dedicated group of galleries and dealers ranging from Australian Galleries, Rudy Komon, Watters Gallery, Bonython Gallery, Gallery A and the emergence of Robin Gibson Gallery, Charles Nodrum, Philip Bacon Galleries and Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery championed the emerging and established artists of the period including Ron Robertson Swann, Rosalie Gascoigne, Bert Flugelman, Ken Unsworth, Clement Meadmore and Robert Klippel. Differing opinions of this shift was echoed in the critiques and publications of Alan McCulloch, Graeme Sturgeon, Ken Scarlett, James Gleeson, Lenton Parr, Elwyn Lynn and Ian Burn.

Location: Tom Bass Sculpture Studio in Erskineville
